Marcel Lenz: “From being the worst student to the best professor”

Marcel Guillem Lenz Castelló tells his career story

Paula Chaves, Laia Codina, Liv Feliu, Leo Quiroz i Miquel Tarragó / Roses

What made you come to this school?

At first, I was working in a lab at a hospital, and I wasn’t fine there because I didn’t have a good relationship with my partners. I was looking to shake my professional life, and always thought about teaching. Then, I thought it was the best moment to do it.  At first, I looked everywhere to do my practices. I saw an ad, and I applied. Everything went very fast and very well. I only had to do three interviews, and I got admitted. I knew I wanted to teach, so now, I’m a teacher and  it is amazing.

What was your first feeling when you started teaching at this school?

I was very nervous, I was shaking. I didn’t want the students to see me anxious, right? But it was only for the first two weeks. Then, it was more relaxing and joyful. Speaking with students, doing the practices in the lab, etc.

How old were you when you started doing classes?

I was 29. I came here last year so now I’m 30.

What is your favourite school year to teach?

That’s difficult. Teaching the 1st graders, the 3rd graders, or the oldest, the bachelor ones, is quite different. I enjoy mostly the 3rd graders because they are curious, though some of them are bored in class, so I try to motivate them with interesting things. The second graders from bachelor more technical.

Do you think you can you retire yourself here?

I would like to.

What do you like the most to teach?

Everything is really interesting, but the cell part is my favourite.

Who is the teacher you get along with the most?

Ernest and David, since last year, we taught in Cap de Creus for a biology course for students who wanted to do something else outside the school. That was great, so our relationship became better.

What would you like to say to yourself in 10 years?

Keep enjoying teaching.

What was your favourite subject when you were young?

That’s difficult. I mostly enjoyed doing sports, but mostly basketball. I was a player and then I was a coach.

Are you from Roses?

No, I am from Empuriabrava, Castelló d’Empúries.

Where were you born?

In Figueres.

Do you want your children to go to this school?

Yes, why not? It is a very nice environment for the kids, and their teaching  is auspicious. I really want to improve my part here teaching.

Is there something that you don’t like about our school?

No, right now, nothing comes to my mind. I can’t say anything now.

Where did you study?

I studied biology at the University of Girona.

As a student, were you a hard working one?

Not, not really. I tried to do a bachelor’s degree. The first year, I went there because I wanted to be with my friends and not because I wanted to study. So I spent my time  with my friends, was happy there, had fun, and when I had to work I didn’t do anything. My mother didn’t agree with that, obviously. So, she quit me from school and made me work. She told me: “I want you to think about your future, this isn’t the place. Maybe working will make you think hard about what you want to do.” Later on, I went to a middle- grade cycle, Institut Illa de Rodes. Afterwards, everything went very well. I finished my degree when I was 25 years old, and I started it when I was 20.

Have you ever considered living in Barcelona or another city bigger than Roses?

Not in Barcelona, but Girona would have been a good option.. I wanted to live in Girona working, not studying.

What do you do in your free time?

I do sports, read and play video games in my free time.

Why are you a secondary teacher and not a primary teacher?

One of the jobs I wanted to do was teaching at a primary school, but I used to have with very complicated ideas and I was a very curious person. That’s why I started to study biology; I like to think differently, like how plants form microorganisms. And because of that, I became a secondary Biology teacher.

Where did you study?

I went to the University of Girona,  the primary school in Castello d’Empúries and high school in  Illa de Rodes.

Thank you very much for your time, we really appreciate it.
