Genís Pinart: “The great life of a civilian boss”

What jobs are you specialised in?

I have a Master, an ice cream shop, and I am a volunteer, and I don’t change anything.

As head of civil protection of Port de la Selva, we would like to know how many people you have rescued.

I understand that you mean to save a life; in this case, I have only done nine radio lung operations, and I have only been able to save four, not on my own but with the help of the whole team, always with the team, never alone. I have also helped many people who have been lost or injured in inaccessible places.

Do you remember a particular one that affected you or one you will never forget?

Yes, this one will come out on TV3, in a well-known program by Albert Tom, who asked me the same question. There have been many dead people, but the one which affected me the most was a little girl’s death, a 4-year-old girl who fell from the tower of Sant Pere de Rodes. The helicopter doctor saved her. The intervention of that woman was spectacular; she had different cardiac arrests, and she was calm the whole time. From that day on, there has been a before and an after in how I act. The calmness and tranquillity with which the doctor worked with a little girl who was already dead but who finally was saved rewarded me.

How did you become the head of civil protection?

Since I was 14, I have participated in volunteer emergency teams, ADF, Forestry, and civil protection, and the mayor suggested I should be the leader. The council voted and chose me.

What does being head of civil protection consist of?

-Well, in small towns like mine, it covers everything. We are volunteers, so we don’t charge money. We teach the population to avoid risky situations and report dangerous conditions. We also ensure that people are informed about everything and act if an emergency occurs. We prevent, and if there is an emergency, we do the first intervention. That is to say, if we arrive first, we act until the professionals come.

How interesting! You have also had bad luck with your car. Can you tell us if you have had any accidents?

Well, in small towns like mine, it covers everything.

How did you feel at that moment?

The only thing I was afraid of was that the fire could reach the entire gas tank. Well, I acted calmly because I knew I had time to get the car off the road, and my son was able to get out well. I could also remove the bags from the back and wait for the firefighters to arrive. I was calm as I was already used to emergencies, which would be more complicated for another person.

Why did you want to be a French teacher?

Well, I’m not a French teacher. I’m a primary school teacher. I was an EGB teacher, but within the EGB, you had to do a speciality. You had to choose between English and French, and I decided on French.

How is your day now that you are the head of civil protection, a teacher and an ice cream maker?

I organise myself very well and prioritise according to the emergency. If it’s a minor emergency, I usually don’t go; if it’s a bigger one, I go immediately. I organise myself and look for emergency groups that inform me of the situation if they need help.

Let’s change the subject. What is your marital status, and how did you fall in love?

I’m currently married, and this question is excellent but embarrassing. I still need to find out. I was very young and unconscious. It’s a joke, it’s a joke. I’m as in love as the first day.

Thak you very much for your answers.
